Senior named conference's Female Athlete of the Week.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Memphis' Arnica Zitting has been named the American Athletic Conference Female Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
It is Zitting's second conference weekly honor both of the season and for her career. She also received the weekly accolade Sept. 5 after her first-place run at the season-opening Brooks Twilight Classic.
At last Saturday's Greater Louisville Classic, Zitting placed second overall in the women's 5k race. She ran the course in a time of 17:56.51, her best 5k time in her two seasons at Memphis. Her previous-best 5k time was 17:58.8 at the 2016 Brooks Twilight Classic.
Zitting helped lead the Tigers women's squad to a second-place team finish in Saturday's race.
The second-place individual performance was the sixth top-10 finish of her career and her fourth at Memphis. She placed in the top-two in all three races in 2017, winning the Brooks Twilight Classic Sept. 2 and Rhodes College Invitational Sept. 16 in addition to her second-place finish Saturday.
Earlier this season, Zitting made program history when she became first female runner to win the annual season-opening Brooks Twilight Classic. She placed first in a time of 18:01.43. This was the 15th year the Brooks Twilight Classic was run.
Two weeks later at the Rhodes College Invitational, Zitting won her second race of the season and became the first female runner since 1997 to take top honors twice in a season. Arielle Frileaux pulled off the same feat twenty seasons ago.
Last season, the St. Charles, Mo., native finished 16th at the American Athletic Conference Championships. She helped lead the Tigers to a third-place finish, marking the best women's team performance at a conference event in program history.
As a sophomore at Arkansas State in 2015, Zitting earned All-Sun Belt Conference third team honors with her 12th-place finish at the league championships.
