Rifle Drops Match To Akron

Doran posts top aggregate score in the match.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis senior Makennon Doran posted the match's highest individual aggregate score, but Akron took the team victory 4655-4611. Doran shot an aggregate of 1161.
The Tigers logged their best smallbore (2286) and second-best aggregate (4611) scores of the season. Akron won both disciplines on the way to the win.
Junior Leighton Dempster, senior Haylea Broughton, sophomore Levi Clark and freshman Matt Dorey all posted top-10 aggregate scores for Memphis.

The Tigers get a breather after a hectic start to the 2017-18 season in which they shot five matches in a 20-day span. Memphis is off from competition until Oct. 28 when it travels to Fort Worth, Texas, to face top-ranked TCU. The following day (Oct. 29), the Tigers shoot against No. 11 Nebraska, and that match is scheduled to take place at TCU's facility.

"I'm definitely starting to see us put it together the more practice and competitive matches we shoot. Our smallbore (score) was higher this last match, and three of the four individual smallbores were higher. We were working on our smallbore heading into our last match. Our air (rifle) scores did fall a bit, but we've got to keep working every day on both guns and put both together on the same day.
"Both of our freshmen were squatted for at least one gun this past match. They're contributing to the team. Hopefully, their presence on the squatting team and their hard work will push the others to do the same."

- Senior Haylea Broughton shot a season-high 586 in air rifle vs. Akron.
- Senior Makennon Doran shot a season-best 1161 aggregate vs. the Zips. It was the seventh time in Doran's career that he logged a 1160 aggregate score or higher.
- Freshman Adriana Hickerson was squatted for the third time this season in air rifle, and for the third time, her score (580) counted toward the team total. She shot 580 or higher in air rifle in each of the last four matches, and posted a 586.8 average in air rifle in those four appearances.
- Freshman Matt Dorey was squatted for the first time this season vs. Akron. His 581 air rifle score counted in the team total.
- Junior Leighton Dempster shot a season-high 1158 aggregate vs. the Zips.
