Tigers rifle hosts first match in new facility Saturday.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – It is home sweet new home for the University of Memphis rifle team Saturday, Jan. 28.
For the first time in over 20 years, the Tigers host a match on the University's campus, this time at the new Memphis Rifle Facility. Memphis rifle's new home is located in South Hall. The Tigers, ranked No. 11 in this week's national poll, host two top-20 foes in No. 8 Nebraska and No. 14 Jacksonville State.
Although the move to campus has taken away from some practice time, head coach Butch Woolbright and his squad are thrilled with their new residence.
"We still haven't been able to practice consistently because of the move, but we should do okay Saturday," said Woolbright. "We're glad to be back on campus. Twenty years is a long time to be shooting in facilities away from campus.
"This is facility is more convenient with it being on campus, and there is more space for us. We have Nebraska and Jacksonville State coming here Saturday, and this match should give us another good test."
Memphis looks for continued improvement across the board Saturday, as the squad has battled injuries and inconsistency in the early portion of 2017. The Tigers, however, have put together several solid performances the past two weeks.
At last week's Withrow Invitational, Leighton Dempster tied her personal-best aggregate score (1166) and also tied her season-high smallbore mark (577). She placed in the top-20 in both disciplines last weekend.
Freshman Amberlie Ezell set season-bests in aggregate score (1159) and smallbore (577) at the Jan. 21 Withrow Invitational. A week earlier versus Kentucky, Ezell shot a season-best air rifle score (589). Fellow freshman Abby Votava shot a season-high 582 in air rifle last week.
Junior Makennon Doran continued his return to the range at the Withrow Invitational and tied his career high in smallbore (579). Doran also shot versus Kentucky Jan. 15, but that match was his first since Oct. 10.
