Memphis to face Kentucky in a conference match-up.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After a 45-day layoff from competition, the University of Memphis rifle squad returns to action Sunday, Jan. 15 when it faces Kentucky in a Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) match. Sunday's match is set for the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center in Oxford, Miss.
The match was originally scheduled with Memphis as the host, but the Tigers still are in the process of moving to their on-campus home, the Memphis Rifle Facility. The Tigers' new range is located in South Hall, and will be ready to host Memphis' next home match later this month.
The Tigers, ranked No. 10 in this week's Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association's (CRCA), meets the No. 5 nationally-ranked Wildcats for the second time this season. The two programs both competed in the season-opening Ole Miss Open in late September, and Kentucky placed second (4680) and Memphis third (4649) at the event.
Last year, Memphis fell to the Wildcats in Lexington, Ky.
Memphis is back in action for the first time since Nov. 20, 2016, when the Tigers shot in the Gamecock Invitational and placed second. Haylea Broughton (1170), Amy Fister (1169) and Levi Clark (1165) all posted top-10 aggregate finishes to lead Memphis.
In 2016-17 to date, the Tigers have a 13-8 record against opponents ranked in the CRCA poll. Included among those 13 victories are road wins at No. 12 Army and No. 16 Navy in mid-October and wins over No. 15 Akron and No. 13 Ole Miss.
In addition, Memphis has a 5-2 mark against Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) foes, including road wins at Army and Navy. The other three GARC wins were over Ole Miss twice and Akron.
