Tigers head to Temple for Saturday night match-up
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis men's soccer team looks to earn its first American Athletic Conference victory this weekend with a trip to Temple Saturday evening. The Tigers and the Owls are set to kick-off at 6 p.m. in Philadelphia.
Memphis dropped the conference opener last Saturday to Cincinnati by a score of 2-1. The Tigers took an early lead in the first half before conceding a goal before the end of the half and another one with just over five minutes to play in regulation. Josh Burnett scored his first goal of the season against the Bearcats off of a ball played by David Zalzman. The Tigers are now 5-4 on the year and 0-1 in AAC play.
"At the end of the day it wasn't the result we wanted, but I can honestly say that we played well," said head coach Richard Mulrooney. "Our movement was good, good chemistry on the field and we created numerous opportunities. It was just one of those games."
With Burnett's goal, 10 different players have scored for the Tigers this season. Jackson Morse continues to lead the team with three while Carlos Hurtado, Rimington Pimm, and David Zalzman have each recorded two assists.
Jake Leeker has seen almost 800 minutes in goal this season for the Tigers. He owns a 1.47 goals against average with 37 saves this year.
Saturday's match-up against the Owls will be just the fourth meeting all-time. Temple owns a 2-1-0 advantage with the victories both coming on its home turf. All three meetings have come in the last three seasons.
Temple comes into the weekend with a 6-3 overall record and 0-1 mark in AAC play. The Owls are a perfect 5-0 at home with its three losses on the road coming at Rider, at Drexel, and at UConn. Jorge Gomez Sanchez is a scoring terror for the Owls, ranking third in the nation and first in the conference with 10 goals this season.
The Owls have a lot of offensive power as they lead the league in shots per game (15.78), points (49), goals (17), and assists (15). They also lead the league with just seven goals allowed this year.
"You don't want to go 0-2 (in conference) and Temple is a tough place for us to play," added Mulrooney. "I'm hoping the guys remember that we didn't show up for the first or second half (last year) and that if we show up at the first whistle, it'll give us an opportunity to maybe get some points. We're excited about the trip."
Including the Temple match, Memphis will be on the road for two straight. The Tigers will travel to Nashville next Wednesday to take on Lipscomb in a non-conference midweek. Kick-off against Lipscomb is slated for 7 p.m. A free live stream of the match against Temple can be found here or on www.gotigersgo.com.
