Tigers earn their first point of the conference season
PHILADELPHIA – The University of Memphis men's soccer team garnered its first point of the conference season by forcing Temple to a 0-0 double overtime tie Saturday evening. The Tigers move to 5-4-1 overall and 0-1-1 in American Athletic Conference play.
Â
"Our first half was real sluggish and Temple put a lot of pressure on us," said head coach Richard Mulrooney. "We were able to see the game out to halftime where we made some adjustments."
Â
This was the first overtime match this season for the Tigers. Â It was also the first game at home for Temple where the Owls did not come away with a victory.
Â
"We competed more in the second half, which is probably the most important thing," added Mulrooney. "We were able to create more opportunities and limit theirs. Probably a fair result tonight, but a point on the road is tough to come by in the American Athletic Conference."
Â
Memphis struggled offensively to put itself in a position to score in the first half. The Tigers finished the half with just two shots that were owned by David Zalzman and Jackson Morse.
Â
Halftime adjustments paid off in regards to the shots, as Memphis was able to fire six in the second half. Temple continued to apply pressure to the Memphis defense, but seven saves by Jake Leeker kept the Owls from getting on the board.
Â
The overtime periods brought a combined nine shots between the two teams. This was the Tigers fifth shutout of the 2016 season.
Â
Zalzman and Mason Morise led the team with two shots each on goal.
Â
Memphis will return to Tennessee for an in-state non-conference game Wednesday evening against Lipscomb. Kick-off in Nashville is slated for 7 p.m. Updates for Wednesday's contest can be found at www.gotigersgo.com.
