Tigers break up conference play with a non-conference match against Lipscomb
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis men's soccer team will take a break from the conference action this week with a match against Lipscomb Wednesday night in Nashville. Kick-off against the Bisons is slated for 7 p.m. The Tigers are currently 5-4-1 overall.
"It's an in-state game, we scrimmage them in the spring and the fall," said head coach Richard Mulrooney. "It gets very competitive. They're always organized and they play. It's a tough place to get a result. We're going in with a full squad and minutes will be spread out due to having a game 72 hours later against UCF."
After Wednesday's game, there is just one more non-conference game on the Tigers' schedule. Memphis will travel to Central Arkansas on Oct. 18.
This past Monday, junior goalkeeper Jake Leeker was named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll for posting his fourth solo shutout of the season. Memphis tied 0-0 with Temple to earn its first point of the 2016 conference season.
In conference play, the Tigers are 0-1-1 with five more contests remaining. The top four teams in the AAC will qualify for the conference tournament.
Jackson Morse continues to lead the Tigers with three goals scored. Carlos Hurtado, Rimington Pimm, and David Zalzman have each tallied two assists.
Lipscomb comes into Wednesday's game with a matching 5-4-1 record and 4-1-0 mark at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. The Bison are led offensively by Logan Paynter who has scored five goals and tallied two assists. Paynter was named the ASUN Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week after beginning the season with three goals.
The Bisons have used a pair of goalkeepers this year with Micah Bledsoe seeing the majority of the time in goal. As a team, Lipscomb has a 1.23 goals against average and a .740 save percentage.
After Wednesday's match, the Tigers will host UCF Saturday to return to conference play. Kick-off against the Knights Saturday evening is slated for 7 p.m. Admission is free for all matches at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex and all matches can be viewed on the Memphis Tiger Network.
