Memphis Invitational begins at 10 am at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – This is it!
The preseason practices are over. No more scrimmages remain.
This weekend, the University of Memphis volleyball squad starts its 2016 campaign by hosting the Memphis Invitational at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The Tigers welcome Belmont, Central Arkansas and Chicago State to the Bluff City for the annual two-day tournament.
For head coach April Jauregui and her Tigers, the tournament is time to show what the squad has been working on in preseason drills.
"This tournament will provide good tests for us," said Jauregui, who is in her ninth season at Memphis. "We want to see continued improvement and focus on the process. We want to be competitive while playing our system.
"It's a strong tournament field. Chicago State is a new team with several international players. Last season, Central Arkansas finished second in its league, and Belmont is always good."
Last season, the Tigers finished with a second-consecutive winning campaign with a 19-14 overall mark and a 10-10 record in the American Athletic Conference. Memphis placed in a tie for fourth in the final conference standings.
However, Memphis had an 8-9 record in home matches in 2015, including a 3-7 mark in league play. Turning that home record around and protecting homecourt in 2016 has been on the minds of Jauregui and her Tigers during the preseason.
"We want to focus on playing better at home (with our early home schedule)," Jauregui said. "Last season, our road record was way better than our home mark. We want to emphasize defending our home turf early."
The Tigers open play in this weekend's tournament Friday, Aug. 26 against Chicago State at 12 p.m. (CT), followed by a second Friday match against Central Arkansas at 7 p.m. (CT). Memphis wraps up the two-day tournament action Saturday, Aug. 27 with a 2 p.m. (CT) match against Belmont.
