Tigers Women's Basketball Home Only/Road Only League Foes Announced
Jun 08, 2016 | Women's Basketball
Conference moves to 16-game schedule in 2016-17.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Dates and times won't be released until early September, but the University of Memphis women's basketball team learned how its 2016-17 American Athletic Conference schedule shapes out a little with the league's announcement of each school's home and away opponents only Wednesday.
The Tigers play six league opponents – Cincinnati, SMU, Temple, Tulane, UCF and USF – twice on a home-and-home basis. Memphis' two home-only games are against East Carolina and Houston, with its two road-only contests at Connecticut and Tulsa.
The conference office also announced Wednesday that the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., is hosting the American Athletic Conference Championship for a fourth-consecutive year. The American Championship is set for Mar. 3-6, 2017.
For the first time since the conference formed in July of 2013, the league is playing a 16-game schedule from its 18-contest slate of The American's first three seasons. The league's head coaches voted for the change at the 2015 American Athletic Conference spring meetings, and the move allows more flexibility in the non-conference portion of the schedule.
The 2016-17 conference season is the Tigers' first 16-game league schedule since 2012-13, the program's last season in Conference USA. Memphis played a 16-game conference schedule from 2005-06 through 2012-13 in C-USA.
