MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis men's tennis team has gone back to Spain to add another Tiger for the upcoming 2016-17 season. Jan Pallares Monreal (Barcelona) has signed a national letter of intent to join Memphis next season.
The number five ranked junior tennis player in Spain and the top ranked player from the Catalonia, Pallares is a regional singles finalist and doubles champion and has won four International Tennis Federation (ITF) doubles titles in Europe. He also was a training partner for the Spanish Fed Cup team last month.
"Jan will help this team out tremendously," Assistant Coach Chris Doerr said. "Whenever you get a top five ranked guy from the toughest tennis country in the world, you have someone special. He is an exciting and entertaining player who will keep the fans on their toes, but his potential to play at the next level is what really attracted us to him."
Earlier this month, Pallares won the doubles championship of the ITF Junior GRIP2 event in Benicarlo. He also won ITF juniors doubles titles in the International Junior Saint-Cyprien in France, the Sanchez-Casal Junior Cup in El Prat, Spain, and at the Vila Do Conde Junior Tennis Cup in Portugal in the past year.
"Going to Spain to see him play, but also getting the chance to meet his parents, really cemented our feeling that Jan is exactly what Memphis tennis is all about," Doerr said. "He is hard-working, kind, and full of passion for the game. I can't wait to see him in the blue and grey of Memphis."
Pallares, the son of Joana Monreal Carpena and Jaume Pallares Bassets, also plays drums in his time off the court.
"I had a really good feeling from the coaches and I am so excited to play for a team that plays at such a high level," Pallres said.
The Memphis men's tennis team, currently ranked No. 41 in the country, is now awaiting Tuesday's NCAA tournament field announcement to see if they receive an at-large bid in to the NCAA Championship field. Memphis, who beat two top 30 teams on the road this season, went 14-10 on the year and played 16 ranked opponents, including nine in true road contests, sporting a 7-9 overall record against top ranked ITA teams.
