MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis head women's tennis coach Hayden Perez has signed a pair of players to his 2016-17 roster with the addition of twin sisters Josephine and Katherine Cao from Lenexa, Kansas and Shawnee West High School, it was announced Saturday.
"I am excited to announce the signing of Katherine and Josephine Cao for next season," Perez said. "The twins will make a great addition to the program and are the right fit for us. Their success in Kansas and the Missouri Valley is only the beginning for them. We look forward to the players and people they will develop into here at Memphis. We can't wait to work with them in August!"
Josephine, who is one minute older, won the Kansas 6A singles championship last fall while playing for coach Paige Salveter, posting a 22-1 mark on the year and earning Kansas City Star All-Metro honors. The singles championship was the second state championship for Josephine, who teamed with Katherine to win the 2014 6A doubles championship as juniors. The top ranked girls player out of Kansas, Josephine advanced to the semifinals of the U.S. Open Doubles Qualifier in Connecticut last summer.
Katherine would bounce back from her semifinals state singles loss and would finish fourth in the singles draw, improving on a sixth place finish from her sophomore season, and finishing her senior campaign as the third ranked player in the state of Kansas.
The move to Memphis will bring the sisters back to familiar grounds, as both competed in the USTA National Clay Court Championships here in July of 2015. Katherine advanced to the second round of the singles draw of the national event, while Josephine would fall in her opening round match.
The current roster for the Memphis women's tennis program is preparing to host and participate in the 2016 American Athletic Conference Championships, which get underway at Memphis University School (MUS) on Wednesday. The tournament draw will be announced Monday.
