M Club Honoree Bill Hudson Passes Away

Former football player helped Memphis to back-to-back 8-2 seasons in 1960 and 1961.
MEMPHIS -- Bill Hudson, who was a stalwart in the offensive and defensive lines for former Tiger head coach Billy J. Murphy, passed away in Paris, Tenn., on March 2.

Hudson, a graduate of Grove High School, came to Memphis State University in the fall of 1958 and started for four seasons. He helped lead the Tigers to back-to-back 8-2 seasons in 1960 and 1961, playing with such noted players as James Earl Wright, Don Coffey, Fred Moore, Dennis Biodrowski and John Bramlett. Following his senior season, Hudson was selected to play in the Blue/Gray All-Star Game, the Senior Bowl and the Chicago All-Star Game before being selected in the second round of the NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers.

He spent a season with San Diego before being traded to the Buffalo Bills in 1963. Hudson was named All-League in 1966 and helped the Bills to league championships in 1964 and 1965. He would be later named to the Buffalo Bills All-Decade team for the 1960s.

After retiring from pro football, Hudson returned to Paris, TN, and served as the head football coach at Henry County High School and also served as vice principal. Hudson was inducted into the University of Memphis M Club Hall of Fame in 1984.

Funeral services for Hudson are scheduled for 2 PM on Saturday, March 5, at First Baptist Church of Paris. Visitation is slated to start at 1 PM.
