Freshman's high jump mark is ranked among nation's top-15.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Memphis men's track and field freshman Jordan Wesner has been named the American Athletic Conference Male Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. The weekly honor is the first for the Princeton, Wis., native.
At last weekend's Vanderbilt Black & Gold Invitational, Wesner won the high jump with a mark of 7-0.5 (2.15m). He placed first nearly four inches ahead of the second-place finisher (6-8.75; 2.05m).
Wesner's 7-0.5 mark is tied for 14th-best jump in the nation to date this season and also is fourth-best among the country's freshman. His 7-0.5 mark is just under two inches off the Memphis record of 7-2.25 (2.19m) set in 2012.
At the 2016 American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships Feb. 28-29, Wesner won silver and placed second in the high jump (6-9). During the 2015-16 indoor campaign, Wesner placed first in the high jump twice at the Arkansas State Invitational Jan. 22-23 (7-1; 2.16m) and Redhawks Invitational Feb. 19 (6-8.75; 2.05m). His 7-1 jump at the Arkansas State Invitational was an indoor season best.
The Tigers return to action this week with two meets on the schedule. Memphis competes at the prestigious Texas Relays Mar. 30-Apr. 2 and Southeast Missouri's Joey Haines Invitational Apr. 1-2.
