Tigers and Coaching for Literacy Partner for Second Time This Season
Feb 08, 2016 | Men's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Coaching for Literacy (CFL) is proud to continue with Head Coach Josh Pastner and the Memphis Tigers in this season's effort to Fight for Literacy through its Assistant Coach Program.
The goal of the Assistant Coach Program is to utilize the power of sports to raise awareness about the problem of illiteracy and to generate financial support for effective, local literacy work.
Coaching for Literacy's Memphis Collegiate Chapter will raise funds and awareness for the literacy initiatives of two Memphis-based organizations – STREETS and Memphis Teacher Residency (MTR). CFL has over 100 Collegiate Chapter members at 5 NCAA schools: Memphis, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, SMU and Vanderbilt. Chapter members are current college students who provide volunteer work to local literacy programs and raise funds for literacy work in their communities.
The CFL Memphis Collegiate Chapter will give current Memphis students the opportunity to sign-up and pledge their support in the Fight for Literacy. The pledge to support will include opportunities to volunteer and provide financial support. Upon joining the effort, the students will be eligible to win an "all-access" experience with the Tigers men's basketball team on February 25, 2016, when SMU arrives at the Fed Ex Forum to take on the Tigers.
The "all-access" experience includes the following: two courtside seats, access to the locker room, admittance to the postgame interviews, autographed Memphis memorabilia, a picture with head coach Josh Pastner and CFL-themed apparel by Peter Millar.
Only one student can receive the two "all-access" tickets. If you are interested in this opportunity to create a great impact and receive a great experience, refer to Coaching for Literacy's Memphis Assistant Coach Program page.
The Coaching for Literacy Memphis Collegiate Chapter is comprised of current University of Memphis students and is led by Christopher Clowers (Class of 2017). "We are excited to show the care and the passion that our student body has for literacy work our community," said Clowers. "Literacy is the foundation to success in life and we want to do our part to ensure that young students in Memphis have a strong foundation."
"The CFL Memphis Collegiate Chapter is working to give young students in the Memphis community the opportunity to be successful in life," said Mark Alnutt, Deputy Athletic Director at the University of Memphis. "We are thrilled to see our students take a proactive and entrepreneurial approach to solving problems in their community."
"MTR is honored to work with Coaching for Literacy. CFL is a valued partner and important resource to MTR as we seek to provide equal and quality education in our city," said David Montague, President of MTR. "There are many essential aspects to improving literacy in our city. Connecting Memphians to literacy through awareness, tutoring and funding to programs is critical. CFL is an important partner in each of these areas."
"It has been a privilege to partner with Coaching for Literacy in a collaborative effort to decrease illiteracy while increasing life-long learning," said Reggie Davis, Executive Director of STREETS. "The support we receive from Coaching for Literacy directly impacts the lives of young scholars at Kingsbury Elementary School through our in-school Ready Readers and after-school Street Smarts programs."
