LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska (8-1) picked up wins at one, five and six singles and won in a tiebreak at two doubles to take the doubles point in a 4-3 win over Memphis (1-7) in Lincoln on Sunday.
"I'm proud of this group for their effort," Head Coach Hayden Perez said. "There is no quit in any of them. We came up short today, but they need to keep their heads held high because they represented the University of Memphsi well and fought hard. We are improving and our best tennis is still in front of us."
The doubles point came down to a tiebreaker at two doubles. Nebraska won at three, 6-1, and the Tigers answered back with a 6-4 win at number one. Meanwhile, at number two, Memphis was 6-5 down and came back to force the tiebreak. But the home team won the breaker and took the early 1-0 lead in the match.
Freshman Janina Berres evened the match with a straight set win at four singles, but Nebraska answered right back with a three-set win at number one to retake the lead at 2-1.
Kathryn Hughes then evened the match at 2-all, but again, Nebraska quickly had an answer as Paula Del Cueto Cas came back from a first set tiebreak to win her match at six singles, 6-7, 6-3, 6-1.
The match at five singles ended up deciding the team point, as Vasanti Shinde came back from a first set loss to win 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 over Gaby Paul.
Marta Morga won her match at three singles in a tiebreak, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 for the final 4-3 score.
Memphis will wrap up the six-match road trip with a pair of non-conference matches in New York City. The Tigers will face Kansas State and host Columbia next weekend.
