No. 9 Memphis is vying for one of eight NCAA Championships spots.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis rifle squad travels to Murray, Ky., this weekend to compete in the 2016 NCAA Sectional Qualifier. The NCAA postseason event is scheduled for the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range on the Murray State University campus.
Teams are slated to shoot all weekend, so complete official results will be available late Sunday night or Monday. Memphis shoots Saturday, Feb. 20.
The No. 9 nationally-ranked Tigers head into this weekend's NCAA Sectional Qualifier with a little momentum after posting a victory over rival Ole Miss Feb. 9. The match was held at Jacksonville State University.
Memphis defeated the Rebels 4644-4622 and won both disciplines. In the match, junior Amy Fister posted a career-high aggregate score (1174) and tied her career best in air rifle (590).
"We may be as healthy as we've been in some time going into this weekend's match," said Tigers head coach Butch Woolbright. "Things are getting back to normal. Our practices have been good all week. We've got to be optimistic and have positive thoughts heading into the postseason."
The NCAA Section Qualifier makes up half (50 percent) of the score used to determine the nation's top-eight teams that compete at the 2016 NCAA Rifle Championships. The other 50 percent of the score is from the team's top-three results from the regular season, with each result from a different shooting range.
The eight teams that move on to the NCAA Championships will be announced the weekend of Feb. 26-28. The 2016 NCAA Rifle Championships are scheduled for Mar. 11-12 at the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio.
Last season, the Tigers placed second at the NCAA Sectional Qualifier and just missed advancing to the NCAA Championships. Fister was selected as an individual smallbore competitor for the 2015 NCAA Championships, where she placed 20th.
