Tigers Track And Field To Compete In Music City Challenge

Third meet at Vanderbilt for Memphis this season.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – For the third time this indoor season, the University of Memphis track and field squads are making the three-hour trek east to Nashville, Tenn., to compete in Vanderbilt University's Music City Challenge this weekend.
The action begins Friday, Feb. 12 at 4 p.m. (CT) with the men's and women's high jump. Friday's schedule concludes with the men's and women's 5000 meters around 8:30-9 p.m. (CT). Saturday's (Feb. 13) schedule starts at 10 a.m. (CT) and runs through 5:30 p.m. (CT).
This weekend's meet is the third one the Tigers have participated at Vanderbilt this indoor campaign. Memphis opened its 2015-16 indoor season at the Dec. 5 Commodore Indoor Opener and also competed in the Jan. 29-30 Vanderbilt Invitational.
Other collegiate programs joining Memphis at this weekend's Music City Challenge are: Austin Peay, Belmont, Clayton State, Furman, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Jacksonville, Lipscomb, Miami (Ohio), Middle Tennessee, Milligan, Mississippi State, Murray State, SMU, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Tennessee Tech, Texas Tech, UCF, Vanderbilt and Western Kentucky.
The city of Nashville and Vanderbilt have been kind to the Tigers in their two previous visits.
In the Dec. 5 Commodore Indoor Opener, Memphis had nine top-three finishes (5 men/4 women), including four first-place performances. Carolina Carmichael (pole vault) and Destinee Lansden (400m) placed first in their respective events, while LaForrest Church (800m) and the Tigers 4x400m relay also had first-place finishes.
For their efforts in the Dec. 5 meet, Carmichael and Church earned American Athletic Conference weekly honors.
The Tigers had only four top-three performances at the Jan. 29-30 Vanderbilt Invitational, but posted two school records and had two additional records nearly broken.
Carmichael and Martina Rodriguez Sala set the school records. Carmichael broke her own school pole vault record with a mark of 14-0.75 (4.29m) and placed first. Her mark is currently the best in the American Athletic Conference and ninth-best in the nation. For her performance, Carmichael received her second league Female Field Athlete of the Week this season.
Rodriguez Sala set the Tigers record in the mile, crossing the line in a time of 4:50.79. She broke the previous record of 4:51.44 set in 2013.
The Tigers men had two near-record marks at the Vanderbilt Invitational. Church won the 800m in a time of 1:49.65 and came within .63 seconds of the school record. It was the second 800m first-place performance for Church at Vanderbilt. His 800m time of 1:49.65 is the 34th-best in the nation.
The Memphis 4x400m relay was within .56 seconds of the school record with its time of 3:16.46.
