Crawford's Career Night Helps Tigers Down South Carolina
Dec 30, 2016 | Men's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Markel Crawford scored a career-high 28 points, while Dedric Lawson tied a season-high with 15 rebounds and set a new career-high with eight assists, as the Memphis Tigers took down the South Carolina Gamecocks, who were ranked 25th in the USA Today Coaches Poll and receiving votes in the Associated Press poll.
Crawford hit 9-of-13 shots from the field, and 10-of-12 from the charity stripe for his career-high total. He topped his previous career-high of 20, which was set earlier this season against Oklahoma. Dedric Lawson scored 19 points, making 4-of-9 from the field and 11-of-13 from the free throw line. Jimario Rivers also reached the double-figure plateau with 10 points, making 4-of-7 shots overall.
Lawson's 15 rebounds are tied with the total he had in the season opener against UTRGV, and is the 11th time this season he has reached the double-figure rebounding plateau. His double-double was the 28th of his career, and the 11th this year which is tied for the most in the NCAA. Lawson also set a career-high with eight assists, and ranks inside of the top-10 in the American Athletic Conference in points, rebounds, and assists - the only player in the conference to claim such a distinction.
Memphis hit 46.5 percent of its shots from the field (20-of-43), and made 78.4 percent from the free throw line (29-of-37). The free throw percentage total marked the fourth straight game for the team to shoot 70 percent or better. South Carolina out-rebounded Memphis 35-to-32, and Memphis had a negative assist-to-turnover ratio (14 assists, 16 turnovers) for just the second game this season (Memphis is 2-0 in those games).
South Carolina jumped out quickly, and led for the majority of the first 11 minutes of the game, including by three at 15-12 with 11:23 to play in the opening half.
Over the next 4:11 the Tigers ran off an 11-0 run, kicked off by a pair of Dedric Lawson free throws, and capped by a Jeremiah Martin three-point play with 7:12 to play in the first stanza.Ā
The Tigers would not trail again in the game, despite the Gamecocks cutting the margin to five at the halftime break.
Three straight points to open the second half put the Tigers ahead by just two, and continued to lead by two following a Rakym FelderĀ three pointer.
The Tigers then ran off a second 11-0 run of the game, turning the two-point lead into a 13-point advantage, capping the run on a pair of Dedric Lawson free throws. The margin reached single digits just once the rest of the way, and for just 24 seconds, as Memphis cruised to the 70-54 win.
Memphis returns to action on January 5, when the squad hosts the UConn Huskies in a 6 p.m. contest at FedExForum.
