Tigers Topple Iowa 100-92 for Tournament Split

NICEVILLE, Fla. – Dedric Lawson scored a career-high 35 points as the Memphis Tigers won the third-place game of the Destin Realty Emerald Coast Classic by a 100-92 score over the Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday afternoon.
Lawson hit 15-of-22 shots from the field, and 5-of-7 from the charity stripe for his career-high scoring effort. K.J. Lawson scored 17 points, while Markel Crawford scored 16, Craig Randall II, and Jeremiah Martin a career-high 14.
Dedric Lawson pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds, while K.J. added 10 as each had double-doubles in the game. Martin dished out a team-high five assists, as K.J. had four and Dedric three. Martin also lead the team with four steals, as the Tigers forced 18 turnovers in the contest.
Memphis and Iowa traded baskets to start the game, Chad Rykhoek scoring for Memphis and Peter Jok scoring the first three of his 42 points.
Tied at seven points apiece 2:37 into the game, Memphis ran off a 14-2 run to lead by a dozen points two and a half minutes later.
The Hawkeyes chipped away at the deficit, and eventually took a one-point 30-29 lead halfway through the opening period.
The game of runs saw Memphis jump ahead by as many as six with three and a half minutes remaining in the first half, as the Tigers were able to hold on for a three-point, 54-51 lead at the halftime break.
Iowa came out firing to start the second half and out-scored Memphis 12-4 through the first three and a half minutes of the second period. The Tigers answered the Hawkeye run with a 17-2 run of their own over the next three and a half minutes to push ahead to a 10-0 advantage.
Memphis would not trail again, as Iowa fought back and closed to within as few as three at 89-86 following a Jok three-pointer, and again at 91-88 after two Jok free throws.
The Tigers countered the final three-point margin with an 8-2 run of their own to lead by nine at 99-90, before cruising to the 100-92 victory.
Memphis hit 40-of-72 shots from the field, 55.6 percent, and 7-of-18 (38.9 percent) from beyond the arc. The Tigers had 17 assists against just seven turnovers, but were out-rebounded for the first time this season, 32-to-31.
Memphis returns to action on Wednesday, November 30, when the team hosts Jackson State University at 8 p.m. at FedExForum.
