Memphis Takes Down Jackson State 84-69

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Behind a 17-point, 12-rebound double-double from Dedric Lawson and 18 points from brother K.J. Lawson, the Memphis Tigers ran past the Jackson State Tigers on Wednesday (November 30) evening by an 84-69 final score.
K.J. Lawson led four Memphis players in double-figures with 18 points while Dedric Lawson scored 17, Markel Crawford 15, and Jimario Rivers a career-high 13 points. Chad Rykhoek finished just off of the double-figure pace with eight points. Lawson pulled down a dozen rebounds, as Memphis and Jackson State each ended the game with 41.
Memphis, which came into the game ranked second in the country in assists per game, dished out 21 on 27 made field goals, led by a career-high-tying eight from Jeremiah Martin, as K.J. Lawson gave out five. Dedric Lawson blocked a career-high-tying five shots for Memphis, as the hosts had a 21-to-11 assist-to-turnover ratio in the contest.
Jackson State struck first in the game, winning the opening tip and then scoring 21 seconds into the game to take a 2-0 lead. From there, Memphis answered with 10 straight points, capped by a dunk from Rykhoek to give Memphis a lead it would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.
The visitors cut into the deficit at 10-4; however, Memphis answered with a 12-1 run to jump the margin to 17, just over seven minutes into the half.
The margin reached single digits a handful of times, and was cut to 10 with three minutes to play in the period before Memphis closed the first half on a 10-2 run to take an 18-point, 50-32 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Memphis hit 18-of-23 shots in the first half (78.3 percent), 2-of-6 from long range, and 12-of-17 from the charity stripe.
Dedric Lawson drained a paint jumper to start the scoring in the second half and push the margin back to 20, although the feisty Jackson State squad would not give up. The visitors got as close as eight at 67-59 with 8:59 to play in the game, before a 12-2 Memphis run took the margin back to 18 points, as Memphis cruised to the 15-point win.
For the game Memphis hit half of its 54 shots, and 4-of-18 from long range. Memphis also converted on 74.3 percent of its free throw tries (26-of-35). Jackson State, which was led by Edric Dennis who scored 21 points including hitting 4-of-10 from long range, while Yettra Specks scored 19 points with six assists.
Memphis returns to action in its first true road game of the 2016-17 season, as the Tigers travel south to Oxford, Mississippi to take on the Ole Miss Rebels in a noon tip-off at the Pavilion.
