Tigers Fall at Destin Realty Emerald Coast Classic First Round

NICEVILLE, Fla. - The Memphis Tigers fell for the first time this season in the opening round of the tournament portion of the Destin Realty Emerald Coast Classic to the Providence Friars by a 60-51 final score.
Dedric Lawson scored a game-high 19 points, while Chad Rykhoek scored 10. Jeremiah Martin added seven points, while Markel Crawford chipped in six. Lawson pulled down nine rebounds, as the Tigers out-rebounded the Friars 40-to-33, and the squad had 12 assists on 20 made baskets, led by three helpers from K.J. Lawson.
Memphis never trailed in the first half, and led by three at 11-8 before running off eight straight points on a three-pointer from Craig Randall II, a put-back dunk from Ā Rykhoek, and a three-pointer by Jeremiah Martin, pushing Memphis to a 19-8 lead.
The margin reached as high as 12 following a lay-in by Dedric Lawson at 28-16 with 4:27 to play; however, the Memphis offense struggled down the stretch in the first half, as Providence out-scored the Tigers 13-2 over the final four and a half minutes, cutting the deficit to one at the halftime break.
Memphis kept its lead throughout the first half of the second period, with Providence taking its first lead of the game on a Kalif Young dunk with 10:08 to play in the game. The Tigers tied the score back at 39, before the Friars scored six straight to push ahead by six points. The Tiger deficit reached its high point with 22 seconds left in the game on a pair of free throws, giving the game its 60-51 final score.
Rodney Bullock led three Friars in double-figures with 18 points, while Emmitt Holt had 16 points and 10 rebounds.Ā
The Tigers return to action on Friday, November 26 at 3 p.m. (CT) when the squad faces off against the Iowa Hawkeyes in the third place game of the tournament.
