Nov 20, 2016 | Women's Basketball
Williams scores career-high 18 points in the setback
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's basketball team dropped to .500 on the season after a 68-58 setback to Kansas Sunday afternoon. Three players finished in double figures for the Tigers, as Memphis is now 2-2 this season.
Â
Taylor Williams, with four made three-pointers, finished with a career-high 18 points while Cheyenne Creighton and Taylor Barnes scored 16 and 10 points, respectively.
Â
Tied at 10-10 with 4:29 on the clock in the first, Memphis rattled off a 6-0 run capped by a lay-up from Creighton for the first momentum swing of the contest. In the middle of that run, Damonique Miller came up with a big steal that led to a Creighton lay-up.
Â
A slow start in the second quarter by Memphis allowed for the Jayhawks to peck away at the Tiger lead. A jumper by Kansas' McKenzie Calvert with 2:21 before intermission proved to be the final lead change in the contest.
Â
The Jayhawks continued to build upon their lead throughout the third quarter, including a 12-4 run in the heart of the quarter.
Â
Down 16 with 4:38 to play, a lay-up by Loysha Morris ignited an 8-1 Tiger run to cut the margin down to seven with 2:44 remaining. Two of the four three-pointers hit by Williams came during the Memphis run.
Â
A pair of free throws by Kansas combined with another Jayhawk jumper put a halt to the potential Tiger comeback.
Â
Creighton finished just one rebound shy of a double-double and Morris led the Tigers with five assists. Memphis committed 19 turnovers while forcing 22 by Kansas and the Tigers were outrebounded, 34-30, by Kansas.
Â
Memphis hits the road this week for the Nugget Classic hosted by Nevada. The Tigers will play Arkansas on Nov. 25 and either Nevada or Navy on Nov. 26. For more information on the Memphis women's basketball team, follow us on Twitter at @MemphisWBB.
