Tigers Run Ahead Early, Hold On Late Against Panthers
Nov 16, 2016 | Men's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis used a 16-0 first half run to jump ahead, and the Tigers never trailed again in the game in a 68-54 win over the Milwaukee Panthers.
The Tigers got double-doubles from Dedric Lawson (23 points, 10 rebounds), and K.J. Lawson (11 points, 11 rebounds), while Markel Crawford scored 15 points, hitting half of his 12 shots in the game. Jeremiah Martin gave out eight assists against no turnovers, and as a team Memphis had 19 assists to eight turnovers.
"We really shared the basketball once again," said Memphis head coach Tubby Smith. "We were playing unselfishly and we beat a good team tonight. I was very impressed with Coach (LaVall) Jordan and how his team executed. They were very poised. We did what we had to do to get the win tonight."
Memphis hit on 46 percent from the field (29-of-63) and 8-of-21 (38.1 percent) from beyond the arc. The Tigers also out-rebounded the Panthers 40-to-27, the second consecutive +13 margin on rebounding.
Milwaukee led for just over three and a half minutes in the game, all coming in the first three and a half minutes of the contest, before the Tigers ran out to their 16-0 streak.
Once the margin reached double-digits in the first half, the Tiger advantage was cut to as few as nine, but grew to as many as 14 when Jeremiah Martin hit a jumper with 2:44 to play to send the Tigers into the locker room with a 38-24 advantage.Ā
Memphis scored the first four points of the second half to lead by as many as 18, before the visitors started chipping away at the advantage behind strong shooting.
Milwaukee was able to climb to within seven at 51-44, but could not get any closer, as Memphis countered with an 11-2 run to push the margin to 16, and the Tiger lead was never cut to fewer than 10 the rest of the way.
The Tigers, now 2-0 on the season, return to action on Saturday, November 19 when the team hosts Savannah State in an 11 a.m. tip-off at FedExForum.
