MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Coming off winning its own Tiger Open, the University of Memphis rifle squad is back in action with an East Coast road swing Sunday and Monday.
The Tigers, ranked No. 10 in the latest Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) poll, make their first trip outside the Mid-South to face No. 14 Navy and No. 13 Army in Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) match-ups. Memphis shoots against the Mids in Annapolis, Md., Sunday, Oct. 9 and then travels to West Point, N.Y., to meet the Black Knights Monday, Oct. 10.
For Memphis, both matches provide early-season challenges.
"Both services academies have good teams, and I expect them to be better than they were a year ago," said Tigers head coach Butch Woolbright. "(Army head coach) Lt. Col. Web Wright and (Navy head coach) Bill Kelley have recruited good people.
"They'll be hard to beat at their places. We've never won at Army, and we were fortunate to win last time at Navy. We should have two good matches."
Memphis last traveled to Navy and Army in the 2014-15 season. The Tigers defeated the Mids 4651-4641 and dropped a close decision to the Black Knights 4632-4626.
Last season, Memphis hosted Army and Navy in matches in the Bluff City and won both encounters. Junior Haylea Broughton led the Tigers to the win over Navy last November, recording the match's top aggregate score (1168). In last October's match against Army, Amy Fister helped lead Memphis to victory with a second-place 1162 aggregate score.
Memphis enters action this Sunday after finishing first in its own Tiger Open. The Tigers defeated four ranked teams in No. 12 Jacksonville State, No. 15 Ole Miss, No. 16 Akron and No. 19 UT Martin in claiming the Tiger Open title.
Fister posted the Tigers' top aggregate score (1170) and placed third overall. Freshman Levi Clark placed seventh overall with an 1161 aggregate score, and Broughton also placed among the open's top-10 aggregate scores (1159).
"For the first match of the season, it went good," Woolbright said. "Everyone is performing well for us. After only his first collegiate match, Levi has come to the forefront. Haylea also is getting back to the level we know she's capable of shooting."
Memphis also has competed in the Ole Miss Open this season, but results are not yet final.
