Three Tigers score en route to the victory
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis men's soccer team collected its first conference victory of the season with a 3-2 win over UCF Saturday night. The Tigers improved to 7-4-1 overall and 1-1-1 in American Athletic Conference play.
Â
"After going up 2-0, we couldn't have asked for a better start," said head coach Richard Mulrooney. "I was disappointed, however, how we finished the first half. I think we were more composed (in the second half). These conference games are tough. At the end of the day, the three points are the most important."
Â
Memphis jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first 34 minutes of the match. Burke Fahling put the Tigers on the board first with his second goal in the 13th minute. Fahling's scored off of the cross kick by Raul Gonzalez.
Â
Kenneth Kauker, in the 34th minute, became the 11th Memphis player this season with a goal. David Zalzman's corner kick sailed right in the direction of Kauker who headed it into the goal.
Â
The momentum quickly turned tables as UCF answered with two goals in the 37th and 40th minutes. The teams went into the locker rooms tied at 2-2.Â
Â
The second half went scoreless until the 65th minute when Jordan Klipsch connected on the game-winning goal. Two assists were credited on the goal as Kauker clipped Zalzman's corner kick right to Klipsch.
Â
Memphis finished the match outshooting the Knights, 18-8. Junior Jake Leeker earned the victory in goal for the Tigers as he also improves to 7-4-1 on the year.
Â
The Tigers will hit the pitch again next Saturday, Oct. 15 with a match against SMU. Kick-off against the Mustangs is at 7 p.m. at Mike Rose Soccer Complex where admission is always free. The first 100 fans to MRSC will receive a custom Memphis soccer scarf.
