Sanderson scores twice to become the all-time career points leader in Memphis history
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's soccer team won in commanding fashion on Senior Night by a score of 3-1 over USF. The home victory marked the 200th career victory for head coach Brooks Monaghan and senior Valerie Sanderson became the all-time points leader in Memphis history. The Tigers improve to 13-3-1 overall and 7-1 in American Athletic Conference play.
Additionally, the win secures a bye into the semifinals of next week's league tournament.
Prior to the start of Thursday's match, the women's soccer team recognized its seniors, Sanderson and Maryse Bard-Martel.
"A win is a win in this conference, especially against a quality team," said Monaghan. "A little bit unfortunate at the end, it made it a little bit interesting. I'm just ecstatic to get the win. This one's over, let's focus on UCF."
Memphis got the scoring going early in the third minute of the match. Serena Dolan tallied her fourth goal of the year after a corner kick by Jessica Lisi.
Just over five minutes later, Sanderson put herself just one point shy of the all-time record with her team-leading 15th goal of the season. Lisi notched her second assist of the match with her free kick outside the box on the left side. Sanderson finished the play with at header to the left side of the net.
In the closing minutes of the first half, Sanderson became the all-time points leader with her second goal of the match. Miranda Smith, who forced a USF turnover, fed her pass through a pair of defenders to Sanderson. Sanderson then took it one-on-one for the score.
At the half, Memphis outshot USF 10-4 and forced three USF saves.
Both teams were held scoreless in the second half until the 84th minute of the match. A foul committed in the box by Memphis granted USF its fourth penalty kick of the season. The Bulls converted to make it a 3-1 game.
The defense held strong for the remainder of the match to come away with the win. Memphis finished the match outshooting the Bulls, 21-8.
Sunday's match against UCF is the final home match of the season for Memphis. The game originally scheduled for 1 p.m. has been moved to 12 p.m. Live stats for the match can be found on www.gotigersgo.com.
