Maryse Bard-Martel and Valerie Sanderson will be honored pregame
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis sits in second-place in the American Athletic Conference standings with two regular-season matches remaining at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. The Tigers (12-3-1) will host USF Thursday at 7 p.m. for Senior Night before welcoming UCF Sunday at noon.
"I think these are two of the better teams in our conference," Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "Both are very well-coached teams and full of talent. Both have players that can really hurt you with their ability. This weekend, on paper, is our toughest weekend it is back-to-back teams that have stayed at the top of this league year in and year out.
Prior to Thursday night's match against the Bulls, Memphis will honor two of the most accomplished players in Tigers women's soccer history – Maryse Bard-Martel and Valerie Sanderson.
The seniors both came to Memphis from Boisbriand, Quebec and have never missed a match in their four-year careers. The duo has broken records along the way and combined to help the tigers win 42 games since 2013.
Bard-Martel is second in program history with 42 career goalkeeping wins and third all-time with 24 shutouts. Her 250 career saves are the fourth-most and her 1.17 goals against average is the third-best at Memphis.
This season has been one of the finest in her career. She has allowed just 14 goals in 16 matches, has 52 saves, 12 wins and six shutouts. Bard-Martel has been named The American Goalkeeper of the Week twice this season.
Sanderson became the Memphis all-time leading goal-scorer this season with 50 career goals. She is second in program history with 118 career points – just three shy of the record. Sanderson, a three-time all-conference player, also holds the program record with 12 multiple-goal matches.
This season, Sanderson has scored 14 goals, including five game-winners. She also has seven assists and 35 total points. She ranks first in game-winning goals by a senior, second in single-season goals and points by a senior and is in the top-five in assists by a senior.
USF is 11-2-2 overall and 3-2-2 in conference play after a pair of overtime games last weekend. The Bulls started the season 8-0 and reached as high as No. 15 in the national rankings.
Freshman Evelyne Viens leads the team with 13 goals and four assists for 30 points. Senior Leticia Skeete and freshman Andrea Hauksdottir are in second with four goals apiece.
UCF stands at 8-7-1 and 3-3-1 in league play and will play at Tulsa Thursday night. The Knights are currently seventh in the standings and will be playing to get into next week's American Athletic Conference Tournament.
Memphis is fighting for a potential regular-season championship and the right to host the tournament, which runs from Nov 2-6. There is extra incentive to finish as either first or second place, as the top two seeds get a bye into the semifinals.
