Marie Levasseur scores in the 109th minute
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – In the final regular season match of the year, the University of Memphis women's soccer team won in double overtime over UCF by a score of 1-0. Marie Levasseur scored the game-winning goal in the 109th minute of action to keep the Tigers perfect at home.
The Tigers improve to 14-3-1 overall and finish the conference season with an 8-1 record. With the victory, Memphis has secured the No. 2 seed in the upcoming conference tournament.
"It's a special group of kids," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. "When you have a special group of kids, they do some pretty special things. It's been a special season so far, it's all about keeping it up."
Both teams had the opportunity to score throughout the match, but tough defense kept the score at 0-0 through regulation.
In the first overtime period, Memphis had two shots that found the back of the net, but both plays resulted in an offsides call.
Then, in the second overtime, Memphis was fouled in its offensive side of the field. Jessica Lisi took the free kick and served the ball right to Sydney Kingston who took a one-touch to Levasseur in the left side of the box. The goal was Levasseur's fifth this season.
Memphis finished the match with 13 shots compared to eight by UCF. The Tigers did not allow a single corner all match while producing seven themselves.
The Tigers will now travel to Storrs, Conn. where Memphis will have a first-round bye. Memphis will then play the winner of the No. 3/No. 6 match on Friday at 3:30 p.m. CT. For more information on the AAC Tournament, go online to www.theamerican.org.
