Memphis Falls To SMU In AAC Tournament Semifinal
Nov 04, 2016 | Women's Soccer
SMU scores late in the second half to push past Memphis
STORRS, Conn. – A goal in the 85th minute by SMU proved to be too much to overcome as the University of Memphis women's soccer team fell in the semifinals of the American Athletic Conference Tournament by a score of 1-0 Friday afternoon in Storrs, Conn. The loss puts Memphis at 14-4-1 overall this season.
Â
Offensively in the first half, neither team was able to develop any sort of momentum. Memphis had an opportunity early in the contest, but strong defense by SMU kept Valerie Sanderson from having a good look at goal.
Â
At the half, there were just a combined four shots with Memphis holding the 3-1 advantage.
Â
The second half of action was a bit more physical with each team having more opportunities to get on the board. In the 80th minute, Memphis goalkeeper Maryse Bard-Martel made at the time a key save to keep the match tied at 0-0. The SMU offense broke through to create a one-on-one situation inside the box, but the shot was fired right at Bard-Martel.
Â
A corner kick granted to SMU in the 85th minute was the set up for the goal to be scored. Memphis had another opportunity in the moments prior to SMU's go-ahead goal as Elizabeth Woerner and Sanderson had an open field in front of them. The SMU defense forced a pass, however, that led to the Tigers not capitalizing on the chance to score.
Â
Woerner led all Tigers with two shots and Bard-Martel tallied two saves. Memphis finished the match with seven corners compared to just three by SMU.
Â
The Tigers will now await for a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Selection Show is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. CT on Monday afternoon.Â
