Tigers senior earns honor for second time this season.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – For the second time this season, University of Memphis' Ariel Hearn has been named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
It also is the second American Athletic Conference Player of the Week honor in Hearn's career. Previous to her first Player of the Week recognition in December, Hearn had been named to the league's weekly honor roll eight times for her career, including twice earlier in 2015-16 (Nov. 30, Dec. 7).
Hearn also was honored as CollegeSportsMadness.com's American Athletic Conference Player of the Week. It is the second weekly honor from CollegeSportsMadness.com this season.
Hearn helped lead the Tigers to a 2-0 record last week with victories over No. 15/15 USF 88-87 in overtime (home) and Tulsa 69-58 (road). In the two contests, the 5-foot-8 guard averaged 21.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 4.0 steals. Hearn shot 47.1 percent from the field and 100 percent from the free throw line (7-of-7).
The Memphis, Tenn., native had a career game in the Tigers' upset victory over No. 15/15 USF Jan. 20. Hearn netted a career-high 33 points and played all 45 minutes of the overtime contest. The 45 minutes played also were a career best.
She tied career highs with 11 field goals made and five steals versus the Bulls. Hearn also had 10 boards and six assists in the win.
Hearn scored 12 of her 33 points in the fourth quarter and overtime. Her jumper with :38 in regulation pulled the Tigers to within one at 74-73, setting up Memphis with the opportunity to tie the contest and send it into overtime. In the extra session, Hearn's two free throws with :03 on the clock gave Memphis an 88-84 lead and sealed the 88-87 victory.
In the USF win, Hearn hit the 200th three-pointer of her career. She is one of only three players in the program's history with 200 or more treys, joining Alex Winchell and LaTonya Johnson on that list.
The senior guard followed that performance with a solid all-around game in the Tigers' win at Tulsa Jan. 23. Hearn had 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals against the Golden Hurricane.
Memphis (11-9, 5-4 The American) returns to action Wednesday, Jan. 27 when it hosts UCF (4-15, 1-7 The American) in an American Athletic Conference game. Game time is 7 p.m. (CT) at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
