Former Memphis baseball players to play in Pan American Games
DURHAM, N.C. – Former Memphis Tigers third baseman Jacob Wilson and former right-handed pitcher Scott McGregor have been selected to play for the USA in the 2015 Pan American Games. Wilson, currently a member of the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds, and McGregor, who pitches for the Triple-A Syracuse Chiefs, join 22 professional baseball players not currently on Major League Baseball 40-man rosters.
A member of the Memphis baseball team from 2009-12, Wilson was named the 2012 C-USA Player of the Year and a Louisville Slugger All-American. His name can be seen throughout the Memphis baseball record book. Wilson finished his career in the program's top five in games played, hits, doubles, home runs, runs scored and runs batted in.
He will be the first Tiger in head coach Daron Schoenrock's 11-year tenure to suit up for the national team.
"We're just thrilled for Jacob and have really enjoyed following his professional career, especially since he's in Memphis now and in our back yard," said Schoenrock. "Being named to any USA team at any level is one of the highest honors you can receive in amateur baseball. We're happy he's going to represent the Memphis Tiger program as well as the St. Louis Cardinals organization."
In 40 games for the Redbirds this season, the Bartlett, Tenn. product is batting .254 with six doubles and eight home runs. The team's every-day third baseman has scored 38 runs and driven in 47. He has just four errors in more than 300 innings at the hot corner.
McGregor pitched for the Tigers and Coach Schoenrock from 2006-2008 and started in 42 of the 41 games he has pitched in. He turned in his lone career save in the only relief outing of his career. The righthander recorded a 5.74 ERA with 140 strikeouts and 13 wins over his three-year stint at Memphis.
The Cincinnati, Ohio native was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 15th round of the 2008 MLB draft and pitched in their organization until 2014. McGregor then signed with the Washington Nationals. This season he has a 4.09 ERA in 15 appearances (14 starts) and 81 1/3 innigns pitched.
Jim Tracy will manage the team in Canada, and he will be joined on the coaching staff by pitching coach Marcel Lachemann, hitting coach, Ernie Young, and assistant coaches Jim Lett and Roly de Armas.
Tracy, who brings 856 wins and 11 years of Major League managerial experience, has an internationally experienced staff with Lachemann, Young and de Armas, who have all previously coached with Team USA. Young also played, and won gold, at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
The Pan Am Team will first gather in Cary, N.C., at the USA Baseball National Training Complex where it will train from July 4 to 8. The U.S. will then depart for Toronto for the Pan American Games where it will look to win its first Pan Am gold since 1967. First round action kicks off on July 11, against Puerto Rico at the President's Choice Ajax Pan Am Ballpark.
The 2013 World Baseball Classic Team was the latest professional team fielded by USA Baseball. In the most recent Pan American Games, the 2011 club earned the silver medal with a 3-2 record, falling to Canada in the gold-medal game.
