The Tigers run in the American Championship ends in the semifinals
CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Memphis had eliminated two teams, Cincinnati and USF, to advance to the semifinals of the American Athletic Conference Championships but the Tigers had their run ended with a 17-3 loss to Houston Saturday at Bright House Field. Standing at 37-21 overall with an impressive resume, Memphis will have to wait until Monday to find out their NCAA postseason fate.
Houston (42-17) scored a run in each of the first two innings but blew the game open with four runs in the third and five runs in the fourth. Memphis scored two runs in the fifth and one in the top of the eighth.
Memphis has posted 37 overall wins, which ranks in the top 35 nationally. The Tigers record against teams in the top 50 of the RPI is an impressive 13-12. This is a program record fifth consecutive season with 30 or more wins.
Playing in the nation's third toughest league, Memphis finished with a 12-12 record in the American Athletic Conference. Despite finishing fifth in the final league standings, the Tigers had a combined eight wins over the four teams that finished ahead of them.
With wins over Arkansas, Ole Miss and Mississippi State, Memphis recorded a 3-2 record against teams from the toughest conference in the country, the SEC.
The Tigers' senior first baseman Tucker Tubbs is one the nation's leading power hitters with 17 home runs this season. Nolan Blackwood is one of the top closers in the country with a single season school record 14 saves. The sophomore is also on the watch list for Team USA.
Houston started the game with three hard-hit balls to left field, including a lead-off triple that scored on an RBI single. Connor Alexander battled back though to get a 4-6-3 double play and a pop up to end the inning.
The Cougars plated another run in the top of the second inning. Connor Alexander had nearly worked around a lead-off single before Ashford Fulmer hit a two-out RBI single.
Houston loaded the bases with one out in the top of the third on a walk and two singles. An RBI single by Connor Wong ended Alexander's day after just 2 1/3 innings pitched.
Drew Crosby was called on out of the bullpen and got out of the inning but not before the Cougars scored two more runs on an RBI single and a squeeze bunt to make the score 6-0.
Houston was far from done as they scored five more runs on five hits in the fourth as well as a run in the seventh and five more in the eighth.
