Returning sophomore center started all 13 games in 2014
University of Memphis rising sophomore center Gabe Kuhn is one of 50 student-athletes on the 2015 Spring Watch List released by the Rimington Trophy Committee on Tuesday.
The Rimington Trophy is presented annually to the Most Outstanding Center in NCAA FBS Football. Since its inception, the Rimington Trophy has raised over $2.6 million for the cystic fibrosis community. The 14-year old award is overseen by the Boomer Esiason Foundation which is committed to finding a cure for cystic fibrosis and has raised over $115 million for CF Research.
Kuhn, one of five centers from American Athletic Conference schools on the watch list, is coming off a redshirt freshman season in which he started all 13 games for the Tigers. He played 797 of 1,012 offensive snaps during his rookie year (78.8 percent), including every snap in three games during the season.
A native of Wildwood, Mo., Kuhn blocked for a Memphis offense which amassed 5,552 total yards of offense (427.1 yards per game), marking the first time since 2008 that Memphis had 5000+ yards of offense during a season. Memphis produced 300+ yards of offense in every win of a 10-3 season including 400+ yards seven times and 500+ yards three times during the 2014 campaign.
Memphis' offense accounted for 54 touchdowns, part of a school-record, 58-touchdown season. The Tigers shattered the school record for points scored in a season with 471, breaking the old mark of 430 points (2004).
In the classroom, Kuhn has received Tiger 3.0 List recognition and was named to the inaugural American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team.
The Rimington Trophy utilizes the Walter Camp Foundation, Sporting News and Football Writers Association of America All-America team selections to determine its annual award winner. The center with the most first team votes is determined the winner who will be recognized at the Rimington Trophy Presentation at the Rococo Theatre in Lincoln, Neb., on Jan. 16, 2016.
Dave Rimington, the award's namesake, was a consensus first-team All-America center at the University of Nebraska in 1981 and 1982, and became the John Outland Trophy's only double winner as the nation's finest collegiate lineman.
