Four-Run Second Drops Tigers, 6-2, to Cincinnati
Apr 10, 2015 | Baseball
CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Cincinnati scored four runs on five hits and two errors in the second inning to take down Memphis, 6-2, in the series opener at Marge Schott Stadium Friday night. Game two is scheduled for Saturday at 5:00 p.m. (CST) and the series finale will be played at 12 Noon Sunday.
The second inning was an eventful one for both teams. Memphis first baseman Tucker Tubbs led off the second with a solo home run to left field to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. The senior, who finished 3-for-4, also jacked an opposite field solo homer in the fourth inning. Tubbs has hit a home run in three straight games and has four bombs this week.
Cincinnati had an answer in the bottom of the fourth as they scored four runs on some shaky defense and took the lead for good. A pop up to right-center field fell in for a single to lead off the frame. Third baseman Devin Wenzel followed with a double to deep left field. Wallingford was able to get a chopper right back at him for the first out of the inning without a run coming home.
Things fell apart from there. Wallingford got a ground ball to third base that scored a run but Zach Schritenthal threw wide of first base to allow another run to come home. After fielding the errant throw, right fielder Chris Carrier followed with another error to allow the batter, Woody Wallace, to go to third base.
The hit parade continued with a double by center fielder Treg Haberkorn that scored Wallace. After a groundout, a two-out single made the score 4-1.
The Bearcats added a pair of insurance runs with a two-run home run in the seventh inning.
Memphis had its opportunities throughout the game but couldn't take advantage. Center fielder Darien Tubbs walked with two outs in the fifth and moved all the way to third on an errant pickoff throw by the pitcher. Schritenthal walked to put runners on the corners but the Tigers couldn't get a clutch hit.
In the sixth the Tigers got two more runners on but couldn't bring them around to score. Memphis finished the game 0-for-8 with runners on base.
Wallingford pitched seven innings and allowed all six runs. Blake Drabik pitched to one batter and got an out in the eighth. Trey McNickle got the final two outs of the eighth inning.
