Scrimmage Begins Final Two Weeks of Spring Camp

Memphis put its 10th practice of spring in the books on Sunday with the second full-scale scrimmage of camp. After the team went through 110 plays on the day, Memphis coach Justin Fuente said the Tigers need to make a major stride in the coming week.
"As far as who is ahead, that's not really what I am looking at. As the head coach looking at the scrimmage, it's just there is another level we have to find a way to get our kids to ... this spring, right now," Fuente said. "I am not talking about in the fall. I am talking about right now.
"We have three practices this next week. We have to ratchet up the intensity. We are going to have to raise our game and find a way to get these kids, as coaches, to practice at a higher level. That is objective Number One for the next week."
Memphis will be back on the practice fields this Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The team will practice once the following week before wrapping up the spring with Friday Night Stripes, the team's annual spring game set for Friday evening, April 10 at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.
On Sunday the team worked in several different scenarios from beginning drives from the long side of the field as well as starting possessions from the short side at the 35-yard line and going in. The team also worked on down-and-distance scenarios, as well as clock management, both in running the clock as well as two-minute situations.
"Regardless of who moved the ball or who didn't move the ball, it was just average," Fuente said of the workout. "It is not that they are not trying or that we are not giving great effort, there is just another level we can reach. We have to reach it this week."
