Memphis senior outfielder Kane Barrow went 6-for-8 and drove in three runs, including the game-winning RBI in the second game of a double-header
sweep of Eastern Illinois Sunday at FedExPark. Memphis beat EIU 11-1 and 5-2 and took all three games from the Panthers in a weekend series.
Barrow was 4-for-4 in Sunday's first game before going 2-for-4 in the second game of the twin-bill. His RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning broke a 2-2 tie before the Tigers added a pair of insurance runs in the frame.
In addition to Barrow's performance, designated hitter Corey Chafin was 4-for-6 on the day with three RBI. Chafin's first career home run, a solo knock in the fifth inning of Sunday's second game, tied the contest at 2-2.
Memphis improved to 9-4 Sunday and on Tuesday will close out an eight-day stretch in which the Tigers play seven games. Winners of five straight, Memphis plays host to Arkansas State Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at FedExPark. Eastern Illinois is now 0-13 and continues its barnstorming tour of the mid-south Tuesday at Mississippi State.
Game 1 - Memphis 11, Eastern Illinois 1
Memphis banged out 12 hits and matched a season high for runs scored in the first game of Sunday's double-header.
Right-handed starter Dylan Toscano scattered four hits and struck out four in six innings of work. The junior gave up a run in the bottom of the sixth. He would get out of the inning by forcing a double play then striking out Isaac Sampen to end the frame.
Toscano picked up the win to improve to 2-1. Drew Crosby and Trey McNickle combined to pitch three scoreless innings in relief for the Tigers.
Memphis struck for five runs on four hits in the first inning.
Darien Tubbs and Jake Overbey drew back-to-back walks to begin the bottom of the first. Barrow's single to center field drove in the Tigers' first run. Chris Carrier would later double to left and plate a second run. Brandon Montgomery's single on a 2-3 pitch scored Barrow for a 3-0 Memphis lead. After Montgomery stole second, Chafin laced a single down the right-field line to drive in two more runs.
Memphis added a run in the second inning. Tubbs would land on first when he hit into a fielder's choice and later score from first. A base hit by Barrow would send Dixon around second and a mishandled ball in centerfield would allow the Tigers' leadoff hitter to score to give Memphis a 6-0 lead.
With runners on the corners in the bottom of the fourth, Barrow lined a grounder up the middle and off EIU starting pitcher Garrison Stenger that ended in foul territory on the third base side of the field and scoring a run to put Memphis up 7-0.
After Eastern Illinois reached Toscano for a run off two hits in the top of the sixth inning, the Tigers would add four runs in the home half of the inning including a two-run homer by Tucker Tubbs, his second of the season.
Game 2 - Memphis 5, Eastern Illinois 2
Chafin's home run in the bottom of the fifth inning helped erase Eastern Illinois' momentum after they took their first lead in the series in the top of the inning.
Chafin, a junior from Germantown, led off the eighth inning with a single off reliever Christian Slaznik. Pinch running at first, Carlos Williams advanced to second when Carter White reached first safely on a sacrifice bunt which was scored a fielder's choice. A sacrifice bunt by Zach Schritenthal advanced both runners into scoring position. EIU intentionally walked Darien Tubbs to load the bases and set up Barrow's two-out, base hit up the middle. Panther shortstop Cale Hennermann made a diving stop of Barrow's grounder but Tubbs beat a toss to second, allowing Williams to score from third.
Memphis would add two more runs on a bases-loaded walk by Tucker Tubbs as White scored from third while Tubbs came around to score from second as ball four was in the dirt and went to the backstop.
Eastern Illinois threatened in the ninth inning, getting two runners on via base hits before Tiger closer Nolan Blackwood came on to strikeout out Josh Turnock for the final out of the game.
Blackwood earned his fifth save of the season while Craig Caufield earned the win in relief to improve to 2-0.
