Tigers fall 10-2 to the Boilermakers
Feb 14, 2015 | Softball
MIAMI, Fla. – Brooke Lee homered for the second time, but there was not enough offense as the Tigers fell to Purdue 10-2 in six innings in the second day of the FIU Invitational at Felsberg Field at FIU Softball Stadium.
Memphis (2-5) gave up six runs over the first three innings, putting the Tigers in a hole they were unable to recover from.
Calli Irvin started in the circle for Memphis. She threw three innings and gave up six runs on five hits; only five of the runs were earned. She struck out two batters.
Purdue (4-4) served as the home team and opened their half of the first with a bunt single to the pitcher and then a stolen base. After a groundout to third, she scored on a fielder’s choice as she beat out the throw to home from Sami Jo Schulz and slid under the tag. Another stolen base, followed by a single to left made it 2-0. Purdue finished the scoring in the first with a two-run home run, making it 4-0.
In the second inning, a leadoff walk led to a run. Irvin struck out the next batter, with the runner stealing second, and got the third batter to pop up. It looked as if Memphis might escape with no damage, but a base hit allowed the runner to score to make it 5-0.
Memphis didn’t get its first hit of the morning until the third inning, when Irvin hit a looper over second that dropped in-between everyone. Schulz followed with a bunt single that went over the third baseman’s head as she charged in. Kyler Trosclair sacrificed bunted both runners over, but the Tigers were unable to get the hit they needed.
Purdue added another run after an error extended an inning and the Boilermakers took advantage, giving themselves a six-run cushion.
The Tigers broke through in the fourth inning. Cierra Mangum came to the plate with one out, and it seemed she would be out two as she swung through a pitch, however the catcher couldn’t come up with it and she beat the throw to first. Lee followed her and hammered a pitch to right center over the wall for her second home run of the season.
Neither team would score in the fifth inning, nor did Memphis in its half of the sixth. Molly Smith took over in relief of Irvin in the fifth and continued on to the sixth. The first batter she faced hit a long fly ball down the left field line. Hannah Harrell ran over to try to make the play, hitting the fence at the same time. The ball flew free as Harrell tried to recover. Gloveless, she tried to get the ball in, but the runner came around to score on the inside-the-park home run.
Back-to-back walks brought up Ashley Burkhardt, the Purdue first baseman, who hit a walk-off three-run home run to left center, bringing an end to the game.
Memphis returns to action later this afternoon when they take on Florida International in a rematch of last night’s 3-2 loss.
