Tigers Comeback Falls Short
Feb 14, 2015 | Baseball
TULSA, Okla. – The University of Memphis baseball team saw its comeback bid fall just short in Saturday afternoon’s opener against Oral Roberts, 6-3. The Tigers fall to 0-2 on the season while the Golden Eagles improve to 2-0.
Oral Roberts plated four runs in the bottom of the first on two hits, two walks, two hit batsmen and an error. Starting pitcher Colin Lee (0-1) lasted only three innings and suffered the loss. The southpaw yielded five runs on three hits with two walks and two hit batters.
The Golden Eagles would go on to add another run in the third on Noah Cummings’ solo shot down the left field line. Freshman reliever Connor Alexander came out of the bullpen in the fourth to throw four shutdown innings for the Tigers as Memphis appeared to be primed for a comeback. The right-hander fanned five and allowed a run on four hits in his collegiate debut.
Outfielder Darien Tubbs singled with one out in the sixth to spark a rally. After a groundout by Carter White for the second out, Kane Barrow struck out but managed to reach on a wild pitch. Tucker Tubbs doubled down the leftfield line to score both runners and cut the gap to 5-2.
Memphis cut the deficit to two in the bottom of the eighth. Barrow legged out a two-base error when the right fielder dropped the popup. Tucker Tubbs placed a ball in the left-center gap for his third RBI of the afternoon.
The Golden Eagles would get the run back, however, in the bottom of the eighth with three straight singles to lead off the frame. Senior Craig Caufield came out of the bullpen with runners on first and second, but kept ORU from plating a run with a sacrifice bunt, a groundout to third that cut the runner down at the plate and a strikeout.
Memphis went 1-2-3 in the ninth to thwart any chance of a comeback as Kyler Stout earned his second save in as many days. Kurt Giller (1-0) earned the win, going 6.2 innings and striking out five in the effort.
