Justin Fuente Weekly Press Conference Highlights
Opening Statement…
"I have said the previous eight weeks, we have to turn the page and get ready for a new football game. This game just happens to be after a lost. I think our kids understand that and understand the challenge in front of us playing Houston at Houston. Very talented football team, explosive offensively and Greg Ward is playing as good as anybody in America. They have good wide receivers and good running backs. It is a good, explosive team combined with a defense that continues to put pressure on quarterbacks. They are good against the run and can give you different looks. We certainly are going to have our work cut out for us to get ready this week. We have to find a way to keep the game close and see if we can pull it off at the end".
Fuente on playing an offense that is more familiar to the team after facing Navy's option attack…
"You talk about the things you did right and wrong, then you just move on. An example of that is we do not breakdown other defenses on offense when they play Navy. You have to skip over it. So, there are some things that you like to see what you ask the kids to do. You like to see it done. You like see it done well, and then coach off that when they did not do it well. So playing a Navy offense verses a Houston offense is a completely different mindset".
Fuente on the team's mindset after first lost in almost a year…
"It is a reminder of how fragile those things are and how close the line is. In those fifteen games in a row, we won some close ball games. There is a difference between winning a close game and losing by twenty. I think our guys understand that and I think they are going to do a good job preparing for Houston. I do not think their mindset is going to be an issue. We should be able to focus and get rid of that bad feeling the team has after losing".
Fuente on the feelings about the loss on Saturday…
"I do not know if it is tough for me to turn the page. I pride myself on doing a pretty good job of that whether we win or lose. I do not like the fact we did not win. It bothers me. But as far as getting ready for the next game, I have been in this business long enough and if you dwell on whatever happened in the past, good or bad, it is going to bite you. It does not mean you do not learn from it. You take teaching points out of it and then you move forward".
Fuente on Saturday's game at Houston and preparation after playing Navy…
"I do not know how easy it will be because of the kind of team we are getting ready to play. I will use a word I used last week – "more comfortable" – because last week was so uncomfortable. I would not go as far as saying it is easier. We are playing an undefeated team and you start comparing games across the country and you see what they did to Vanderbilt. Then, Vanderbilt and Florida play a 9-7 game. Then you start to understand the level Houston is playing at. It is pretty impressive".
