Tigers Rebound Their Way to 19-Point Win
Nov 06, 2015 | Men's Basketball
Five Tigers scored in double figures
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Tigers out-rebounded LeMoyne-Owen 58-to-25 including a 26-to-6 edge on the offensive glass, while scoring 57 second-half points, running away with a 107-88 win in the lone exhibition for the Tigers.
"We'll take it," said Memphis head coach Josh Pastner. "It was a good win. I felt that we started off a little slow and they had some great shots. I love the fact that we had 23-rebound margin on the glass - 26 offensive rebounds. We were the best rebounding team in the league last year - one of the best rebounding teams in the country - so we got that continuation."
Ricky Tarrant scored 22 points, hitting 4-of-9 shots from the field and all eight of his charity stripe attempts, while Shaq Goodwin had a 17-point, 14-rebound double-double. Trahson Burrell and K.J. Lawson each scored 13 points while Dedric Lawson added 10. Dedric Lawson (one), Burrell (two), and K.J. Lawson (three) finished just shy of the rebounding marks for double-doubles of their own.Ā
The high-scoring effort sets the stage for the 2015-16 regular season opener which has the Tigers hosting Southern Miss on Saturday, November 14.
Avery Woodson dished out four assists with no turnovers, while Burrell had a game-high four steals.Ā
"We have to finish better around the hoop," commented the head coach. "We missed a lot of short shots and we have to be able to play through contact a little bit better. I thought we moved the ball well for the most part. On our first, side shots, we shot under 30 percent from the field. Second and third side shots, we were about 50 percent."
LeMoyne-Owen opened the game to a blistering start, hitting over 75 percent of their field goals over the first 10 minutes of the game, pushing ahead to a lead of nine points, seven minutes into the game.Ā
Memphis answered the nearly double-digit deficit with a 9-0 run to tie the score at 27 and the lead changed hands numerous times the rest of the half before the Tigers closed the opening half following a Tarrant three-pointer, giving the hosts a 50-44 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.
The Magicians closed the second-half gap to two at 52-50 before the Tigers closed the door with a 16-4 run, capped by a Dedric Lawson fastbreak dunk with 13:59 left in the contest. The visitors rallied another threat, dropping the margin to nine; however, Memphis ran off 10 of the next 12 points to put the game out of reach in the 19-point victory.
Memphis shot 46.2 percent (36-of-78) from the field, and 34.8 percent (8-of-23) from long range. One of the major differences in the game was free throws, where the Tigers were 27-of-36 at the charity stripe, including perfect efforts from Tarrant, Dedric Lawson (4-for-4), and Kedren Johnson (4-for-4).
