Volleyball Wrapping Five Game Home Stand Wednesday Night
Nov 10, 2015 | Women's Volleyball
Tigers hosting travel partner Cincinnati Wednesday at 7:00.
MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis volleyball team (14-13, 5-9 American) will wrap up a five-match home stand on Wednesday when third place Cincinnati (16-9, 8-6 American) comes to town. The two teams went five sets in the first meeting of the season in Cincinnati, with Memphis jumping out to a 2-0 lead before Cincinnati stormed back and forced a fifth set. The Tigers won that set 15-13 in both team's conference opener back in September.
Cincinnati comes in after splitting a home series last week. The Bearcats downed visiting Tulsa, 3-2, then fell to SMU, 3-0. Memphis lost to SMU 3-1 on Friday, then fell to Tulsa, 3-1 on Sunday, suffering their fifth straight loss.
The Tigers have been working with the lineup to find some offensive sparks. In the five game streak they are currently on, the Tigers will have played the league's top team, SMU, twice, second place Temple once and now third-place Cincinnati. The stronger competition has seen the Memphis offensive numbers slow down, as the Tigers have not hit over .200 since a 3-0 win at Tulsa on Oct. 23rd six matches ago.
The Wednesday match will be the 47th match-up between the two programs. Memphis has won five straight in the series history, including the 3-2 win at Cincinnati earlier this year. In that win, Oluchi Agomuo downed a season-best 19 kills, while Catlin Lilly and Summer Morgan each added 13 kills. Lindsey Purvis, named to the American weekly honor roll, Monday, after two 20-dig performance last weekend, finished with 23 digs in the last meeting with Cincinnati.
Admission to the last home match in the five-match home stand is free. First serve is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
Following the Wednesday match, Memphis will fly to Greenville, N.C. to face East Carolina Friday afternoon at 5:30 p.m. (ET). The Tigers will then be off on Sunday since they are facing their travel partners on Wednesday night, and will be back on the road again next weekend at UCF (Friday, Nov. 20) and USF (Sunday, Nov. 22) to wrap up their conference road slate.
