Second Half Goals Sink Memphis
Oct 07, 2015 | Men's Soccer
SMU scored two goals early in the second half to break a halftime tie
SMU scored two goals in the first five minutes of the second half on their way to a 3-1 win over Memphis Wednesday night at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. The Tigers dropped to 1-1-1 in conference play and will hit the road again to play Temple Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
"I think the first half was sort of a chess match and it was sort of a stalemate. But its criminal for us to start the second half and give up two goals in five minutes," Memphis coach Richard Mulrooney said. "I give SMU credit but you can't start halves like that and expect to recover against a team like that."
Memphis and SMU were scoreless at halftime but the Mustangs came out firing in the second half and quickly grabbed the lead from a corner kick in the first minute.
They doubled their advantage less than five minutes later after a cross from the right side was finished off by Christian Boorom.
The Tigers quickly got a goal back when Raul Gonzalez converted from the penalty spot. Gonzalez was fouled in the box to earn the penalty.
SMU put the game away in the 64th minute off of a free kick finished off by Mauro Cichero. On the play, Memphis goalkeeper Cody Uzcategui was knocked to the ground while trying to punch the ball away but no foul was given. Uzcategui finished the match with five saves.
Memphis was outshot 11-4 in the match and the Mustangs had seven corner kick opportunities.
"I think you bounce back by knowing that three points are on the line. We worked very hard and we don't want to start giving points away. Going to Temple is going to be a challenge and hopefully the guys are up for it," said Mulrooney.
Temple will also be looking to rebound after they lost Wednesday night by a margin of 3-1, to UCF on the road.
