Third-straight week Memphis is facing a ranked opponent.
Live Scoring
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – For the third-consecutive week, the University of Memphis rifle squad faces a ranked Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) opponent. This week's foe, though, is not only the No. 1 team in the nation, but also the three-time defending NCAA champion West Virginia Mountaineers.
The Tigers host West Virginia in the Bluff City Saturday, Oct. 31. The match begins at 8 a.m. (CT) at the Global Training Academy.
Memphis remained in the No. 9 position in this week's Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) poll, and West Virginia was tied at No. 1 with Murray State.
The Tigers are excited about Saturday's challenge, and head coach Butch Woolbright and his program have tremendous respect for West Virginia.
"The only way you get better is to compete against the best," Woolbright said. "West Virginia is good enough to beat most countries (in international competition). Murray State is currently tied with West Virginia for the No. 1 spot, so the Mountaineers may come here feeling they have something to prove Saturday. I'm looking forward to this weekend."
Last season, Memphis dropped a 4718-4637 decision to the Mountaineers in Morgantown, W.Va. Two seasons ago (2013-14), the Tigers hosted West Virginia in Memphis, and the Mountaineers posted a 4690-4655 victory.
Competing on that Memphis team in 2013-14 was then-senior Dan Hermsmeier, who is now an assistant at West Virginia. It's that and other connections between the two programs that Woolbright believes will take a little of the anxiousness away from facing the nation's top team.
"I don't feel our team has that overwhelming feeling entering Saturday's match, and that may have to do with the familiarity between the two teams," said Woolbright. "I recruited a couple of shooters on their squad, and West Virginia's assistant is our former standout Dan Hermsmeier, who competed with a couple of our current shooters (Beth Lee, Amy Fister).
"The student-athletes on both teams know each other and have competed against each other before. Our team going to do its best regardless of the opponent. There may be a little added incentive for our shooters Saturday, but not a lot."
Last Saturday, the Tigers fell to No. 8 Nebraska in a match held on the TCU campus in Fort Worth, Texas. The Cornhuskers defeated Memphis 4671-4654. Amy Fister and Beth Lee paced the Tigers effort, placing second and third, respectively, in aggregate score.
Following Saturday's match, Memphis travels to Akron, Ohio, Nov. 7 to shoot in the NCAA Championships Rehearsal Match. The University of Akron also is the host site for the 2016 NCAA Championships in March.
