USF vs Memphis Game Notes
- Memphis' captains for the game were LB Charles Harris, RB Brandon Hayes and DL Terry Redden. USF won the toss and deferred to the second half. The Tigers received the opening kickoff.
- Memphis lost the coin toss for the fifth straight time, which coincides with the Tigers' current win streak. Memphis is now (6-1) when it loses the coin toss this season.
- Redshirt freshman Zach Collins earned his first career start at right guard for the Tigers. Senior Nykiren Wellington, who started 11 games last year as a junior, made his first start of the season at left tackle.
- Memphis won its eighth game of the season, the most wins since finishing 8-4 in 2004.
- Memphis won its fifth straight game. The last five-game win streak came in 2003 also in conference play.
- With 31 points in the game, Memphis has now scored 375 points this season. That tally ranks fifth all-time.
- Paxton Lynch has now been responsible for 35 career touchdowns (12 rushing & 23 passing) for sixth all-time. He passed Steve Matthews (1992-93), Billy Fletcher (1963-65) and Dave Casinelli (1960-63) on the all-time list during the day.
- This year, Lynch has rushed for 10 touchdowns and thrown for 14. His 24 touchdowns responsible for this season ranks fourth all-time. He passed DeAngelo Williams (2004) and Dany Wimprine (2004) who each had 22. Martin Hankins had 25 in 2007, which ranks third.
- This is the fourth time Lynch has been responsible for four touchdowns this season.
- Lynch moved onto the top-10 list for touchdown passes with his two against USF. He now has 14 for the season which is tied for seventh most in a season at Memphis.
- Lynch moved to third in career pass attempts at Memphis with 675.
- Keiwone Malone moved into a tie for eighth in career receptions with 113, tying Isaac Bruce (1992-93).
- Brandon Hayes recorded his sixth, 100-yard rushing game. He moved into a tie for fifth in all-time 100-yard games with Paul Gowen (1969-71) and Larry Porter (1990-93).
- Hayes also passed Larry Porter and Paul Gowen for sixth in all-time rushing yards with 2,278 yards.
- Memphis' 27 rushing touchdowns this season ranks tied for fourth all-time with 1960 and 1968. The Tigers had two rushing touchdowns against USF.
- Memphis has now scored 46 touchdowns in 2014, which ranks tied sixth with 2007.
- Mose Frazier caught a 42-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter. It was Frazier's third TD of the year and fourth of his career. The 42-yard catch tied for his longest this season.
- Memphis went into the weekend ranked second in Red Zone Defense, allowing opponents to convert on just of 16-of-24 trips into the red zone (13 TDs, 3 FGs). Opponents had converted on just 66.7 percent of their red zone series. USF converted on 3-of-4 trips into the red zone.
- Senior DE Martin Ifedi passed Tramont Lawless (1996-99) for the school sack record. Lawless has 22 while Ifedi now has 22.5
- Ifedi now has 34 career tackles for loss, tying Marcus Ball (1997-00) for sixth all-time. Ball is the director of high school relations on the Memphis staff.
- LB Ryan Coleman registered his first career sack in the third quarter of the game.
- On the same series, DAWG Jackson Dillon forced his first career fumble and it was recovered by Donald Pennington for his first career recovery at the Memphis 16. The takeaway ended a red zone opportunity for USF and the Tigers ended the drive with a field goal.
- Memphis place kicker Jake Elliott, who entered weekend as The American's leading scorer with 89 points, added to his scoring total with seven points against USF to bring season total to 96.
- With 96 points, Elliott moved into a tie for seventh in season scoring with Curtis Steele (2009).
- Elliott passed Don Glosson (1983-85) for ninth in all-time scoring with 170 points.
- On Saturday, Elliott passed John Cobb (1949) and Stephen Gostkowski' (2003) for second in season PATs – he currently has 45. Gostkowski (2004) is the all-time leader with 48.
- Jake Elliott was 1-for-3 in field goal attempts. Elliott ranks fifth in season field goals with 17. Stephen Gostkowski (2003) kicked 19 field goals in 2003 to rank fourth.
- Elliott's 33 field goals currently ranks seventh at Memphis. Don Glosson (1983-85) kicked 34 during his career to rank sixth.
- Punter Nick Jacobs has currently placed all 14 of his punts inside opponents' 20-yard line.
- Keiwone Malone established a new school record with his four punt returns against USF, giving him 78 for his career. He passed previous career record holder Ryan Johnson's previous all-time total of 76 (1999-2001).
- Malone now has 697 punt return yards. He ranks fourth. Ryan Roskelly (1994-95) ranks third with 720.
