STARKVILLE, Miss. - The University of Memphis softball team fell 8-1 on the road at Mississippi State on Wednesday night at the MSU Softball Stadium.
The Bulldogs (15-4) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning and scored five runs in the third to jump to an early lead.
Ellen Roberts (3-9) gave up six runs, four earned, on three hits with four walks in two and a third innings for the loss. Jordan Richwood pitched the final three and two-third innings and allowed two runs on four hits with six strikeouts.
Memphis (7-13) scored its lone run in the sixth inning. Ijiah Hargrove led off the frame with a single to short and advanced to second on a throwing error to first on the play. She then came around to score on a fielding error at second base on a ground ball hit by Kelly Braman.
The Tigers stranded the bases loaded in the inning and left seven on base in the game.
Mississippi State took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Three walks in the inning loaded the bases for the No. 9 hitter Jessica Offutt who singled in two runs with a hit to left field.
The Bulldogs scored five more runs in the third inning on three hits and an error. MSU again loaded the bases on a single, hit by pitch and a walk that were followed by a one-out single to left center by Erin Nesbit to score two more runs. With the bases loaded and two outs, a fielding error on a ground ball to second base hit by Offutt scored a couple more runs. Loryn Nichols scored the fifth run of the inning on a double to left center by Briana Bell to give MSU a 7-0 lead.
Mississippi State scored its eighth run in the sixth inning with Bell scoring from first on a double down the left line by Sam Lenahan.
Alison Owen (9-1) earned the victory in the circle, allowing no runs on three hits and striking out five in four innings. Kylie Vry completed the save with three innings of work, allowing an unearned run on one hit with four walks and four strikeouts.
Memphis will next open Conference USA play at UTEP in El Paso, Texas, on Saturday and Sunday.

• Bernardino is now tied for second in school history with Heather Mott (2007-11) in hits with 135.
• Bernardino got a hit for the fifth-straight game, matching her longest streak of the season.
• Amber Lindahl threw out her 13th runner caught stealing this season. Lindahl is 13-of-20 on the season.
• Ijiah Hargrove extended her hitting streak to six games, a career best.
• Hargrove reached base for a career-best seventh-straight game.
• Morgan Mosby stretched her hitting streak to four games, which ties a season-long.
