HONOLULU, Hawai'i - A seven-run fourth inning was too much to overcome for the University of Memphis softball team (6-10) as the Tigers fell to Western Kentucky (7-4) in their second game of the Bank of Hawai'i Invitational.
Lelani Bernardino put Memphis up 1-0 in the first inning after reaching base on a hit by pitch to lead off for the Tigers. After advancing to second on a sac bunt from Breslin Perry, Bernardino came home to score off a single from Kelly Braman.
WKU threatened in the bottom of the third by loading the bases with two outs after two singles and a hit by pitch. Ellen Roberts helped the Tigers escape the inning by striking out her fifth batter of the afternoon to allow Memphis to keep a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers added another run in the fourth inning as Laura Curtis began with a leadoff walk to get Memphis going. Sac bunts from Cierra Mangum and Amber Lindahl moved Curtis to third before a single by Libby Goranson brought Curtis home for a 2-0 Memphis lead.
WKU scored seven runs in the bottom frame, highlighted by a three-run homer from Amanda Thomas, to help the Lady Hilltoppers scored six runs with two outs.
Memphis was unable to get a base runner in the final three innings to drop a 7-2 decision. Janna Scheff (2-1) picked up the win for WKU while Roberts (3-7) was credited with the loss. Emily Rousseau pitched the final three innings for WKU to pick up the save.
Memphis will face No. 20/22 Hawai'i later this evening following their game with Campbell.
