BATON ROUGE, La. - The University of Memphis softball team (1-6) struggled offensively in a 2-0 loss to Virginia (3-1) at the LSU Purple & Gold Challenge on Friday.
The Cavaliers got on the board in the second inning as Megan Harris led off with a double down the left field line. With two outs, Shannon McGinley singled up the middle to bring home Harris for a 1-0 Virginia lead.
Amber Lindahl registered the Tigers' first hit of the game in the second with a one-out single to right field. However, the Tigers could not put together a string of hits to bring home Lindahl.
After a three-and-out for Virginia in the third, Cierra Mangum led off for Memphis with a single to left field. A strikeout by Virginia's Melanie Mitchell and a double play by the Cavaliers ended the threat for the Tigers.
The Cavaliers tacked on another run in the fourth inning as Harris led off with a single up the middle for her second hit of the day. A double to center field from Kristen Hawkins scored Harris to increase Virginia's lead to 2-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Tigers attempted to rally with back-to-back singles from Morgan Mosby and Laura Curtis with just one out, but the Virginia defense held strong by not allowing another Memphis hit.
Ellen Roberts struck out two batters in the seventh inning to keep Virginia from adding on to their lead, but the Tigers offense went cold in the final three innings, recording just one hit.
Roberts (0-4) was given the loss for the Tigers, finishing with four strikeouts and just one walk. Mitchell (2-0) picked up the win for Virginia with four strikeouts on the day.
Memphis continues play tomorrow at the LSU Purple & Gold Challenge with a 12 p.m. (CT) contest against Nicholls State before facing No. 10/11 LSU at 7:30 p.m.
