NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Memphis volleyball team jumped out of Conference USA play to take on Tennessee State University. Memphis quickly took the first two sets and looked like they would take the sweep from the Tigers. However, Tennessee State came roaring back to earn the 3-2 victory.
Leading 7-5 in the first set, Lauren Hawkins sparked an 8-0 Memphis run with two of her five kills in the set. Altrese Hawkins recorded two kills on the spurt before Lauren Hawkins capped the run with another kill. Memphis (7-16) extended their lead to 22-11 before Veronica Zimmerman recorded two kills in the final three points to give the Tigers the 25-11 victory. The Tigers recorded 11 kills against just two errors on 23 attempts for a .391 attack percentage in the frame.
Memphis quickly jumped ahead 3-0 early in the second set, and Viktorija Teivane put the Tigers up 6-4 with an ace. Memphis stretched their lead to six points before Tennessee State (11-10) started to gradually comeback. Tennessee State got within 19-18 before Altrese Hawkins hammered home a kill to put momentum back on Memphis' side. Marija Jovanovic recorded a pair of kills before Lauren Hawkins ended the 25-20 set win with her eighth kill of the match. The Tigers hit .259 (11-4-27) in the second set.
The Tigers looked to end the match in the third set as the used a 4-0 run to gain a 12-8 advantage. Altrese Hawkins and Lauren Hawkins accounted for three kills on the spurt. Katie Meyer then put Memphis ahead 18-12 with her only kill of the set. However, The Tennessee State offense started to heat up. The Tigers scored six straight points to even the set at 18 before Jovanovic put Memphis ahead with a kill. Tennessee State then scored seven of the set's final eight points to take the set 25-20.
The momentum carried over to the fourth set for Tennessee State as they scored the first two points of the fourth set. Memphis came back to tie the set at 2-2 and 3-3 before Tennessee State grabbed control of the frame. Tennessee State earned a 16-9 lead and held off a late Memphis rally to take the set 25-20 and force a fifth frame.
Behind kills from Maja Kostic and Lauren Hawkins, Memphis took a 2-0 lead in the fifth set. The Memphis lead grew to 6-1 before the Tennessee State offense heated up. They scored four straight points to force a Memphis timeout. Coming out of the break, the Tigers scored four more points to make it an 8-0 run. Altrese Hawkins finally ended the run with her 14th kill of the match. However, Tennessee State bounced back and scored the next two points. The Tigers went on to complete the comeback with their 15-9 fifth set win, taking the match 3-2. Tennessee State hit a blistering .438 in the final set, eight kills against just one error on 16 attempts.
Altrese Hawkins and Jovanovic each recorded 14 kills to lead Memphis while Lauren Hawkins was the final Tiger to reach double figures with 11 kills. Aleksandra Petronijevic led the Tigers with 21 digs, and Teivane followed with 11 digs. Zimmerman posted a team-high 41 assists.
Memphis will resume Conference USA play this weekend when they travel to East Carolina on Friday. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. (CT) from Greenville, N.C. The Tigers will then take on Marshall at 12:00 p.m. (CT) on Sunday.
