STARKVILLE, Miss. - The National Fast Pitch Coaches Association announced the 2011 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I All-Region teams on Thursday with University of Memphis senior shortstop Heather Mott earning second team honors.
Mott was named to the Midwest Region second team, and is the third Tiger to earn regional honors. Vanessa Walle was named to the second team last year in 2010 as a pitcher/utility and Leila Dolfo earned second team honors in 2006 as a utility.
A native of Pensacola, Fla., Mott leads the team with a .364 batting average, 36 run scored and a .451 on base percentage. She also has 29 RBI, 10 home runs and a .671 slugging percentage. Mott ranks second in Conference USA in batting average, slugging percentage and on base percentage and is tied for third in runs scored.
A 2011 All-Conference-USA First Team selection, Mott is on pace to set a new school season record in batting average. She is currently six percentage points ahead of the school record of .358 set in 2006 by Cara Stiles, the sister of Chattanooga senior outfielder Lyndsey Stiles.
The leader of the Tigers both on and off the field, the fifth-year senior has helped lead Memphis to its first NCAA Regional appearance in the program's sixth year. The U of M earned an at-large bid into the tournament after finishing the season 35-12 with key wins against Stanford, Kentucky, Ohio State, Houston, East Carolina (2x) and UAB.
Memphis will play Chattanooga to open the Tuscaloosa (Ala.) Regional on Friday at 3:30 p.m. The Tigers will then play either No. 2 overall tournament seed Alabama or SWAC Champion Jackson State on Saturday.
Mott is one of 259 players from 127 different institutions named the 10 NFCA regions. The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region, and all the honorees will now be eligible for selection to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America first, second or third teams. In addition, conference pitchers and players of the year not selected to the regional teams were added for All-America consideration.
The NFCA Division I All-America teams will be announced at 4 p.m. CTD on Wednesday, June 1.
