Greenville, N.C.--The doubles point proved to be critical in the Conference USA battle between No. 53 Memphis and East Carolina on Sunday afternoon at the ECU Tennis Complex. Singles play was split evenly with each squad tallying wins in three matches, but thanks to taking two-of-three in doubles, the Tigers secured the 4-3 decision to improve to 8-2 overall and 1-1 in Conference USA.
The second-seeded duo finished play first as freshmen Joe Salisbury and David O'Hare downed Henrik Skalmerud and Stian Tvedt 8-3. The first point of the match was clinched when John Taylor and Leon Nasemann knocked off Massimo Mannino and John Schmitt at the No. 3 flight, also by an 8-3 score.
The No. 1 pair of senior Jordan Smith and junior David Henry were down 4-6 to Jaroslav Horvath and Joran Vliegen, but the match went unfinished as the Blue and Gray had already secured the essential point.
Tallying singles wins for the Tigers were Salisbury at No. 2, with a victory over Horvath in three sets 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, Nasemann at No. 3, over Skalmerud 7-6, 6-4, and Taylor with a 6-4, 6-4 straight-set defeat of Tvedt.
ECU kept things close with wins at the No. 1 slot where O'Hare fell to Mannino 6-2, 6-7(1), 7-6(3), No.4 as Johnny Grimal couldn't outlast Vliegen 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, and No. 5 position where Schmitt came back to beat Henry 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. The Pirates fell to 8-3 overall and are now 0-1 in conference play.
The Tigers compiled a much more sound 6-1 win Saturday, cleaning up in doubles play before taking the No. 2-6 slots in singles, all in straight sets. David Orces aquired the lone point for the Bulldogs with his 3-6,6-0,(10-5) win over O'Hare in the top flight.
Up next for the Tigers is a big test in Oxford, Miss., which has moved to Tuesday, March 1, in a match slated for 2 p.m. CT against the 18th-ranked Rebels of Ole Miss (4-2) at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.
